Your Social Security Deserves a Strategy.
Have You Built Yours?
When you claim affects your monthly income, future inflation adjustments, and potentially your spouse’s financial security.
You have worked too hard building your wealth to choose a Social Security claiming age simply because you became eligible, retired, or heard what someone else decided.
You owe it to yourself to understand your options before you file.
Start with these three facts.
1. Waiting does not mean losing inflation adjustments
Under current rules, eligible cost-of-living adjustments are incorporated into your retirement benefit beginning in the year you turn 62, even if you have not started collecting.1
2. Your starting benefit shapes future increases
For someone whose full retirement age is 67, a hypothetical $2,000 monthly benefit at that age becomes approximately:2
| Claiming age | Monthly benefit |
|---|---|
| 62 | $1,400 |
| 67 | $2,000 |
| 70 | $2,480 |
Illustration excludes COLAs and changes in earnings. Actual benefits depend on your circumstances. Waiting also means receiving fewer monthly payments; this table does not compare lifetime benefits.
A future percentage adjustment produces a larger dollar increase on a larger benefit. That makes your claiming age relevant long after your first check arrives.3
3. The right choice depends on your whole plan
Claiming earlier can be appropriate. So can waiting.
Your health, income needs, savings, taxes, and family circumstances all matter. For couples, delayed retirement credits can also increase an eligible surviving spouse’s benefit.4
The important question is how your claiming choice supports your entire retirement plan.
